Tropical Storm Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a rare Category 5 storm as it turns toward the Caribbean island, causing life-threatening rapid inundation and rock falls.

This weather system, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean and is anticipated to reach land by Tuesday, based on data from weather experts.

Advisories of power cuts and disruption to utilities have been issued as Melissa brings up to 30 inches of rainfall and sea level surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been advised.

The cyclone is the 13th named hurricane in this year's Atlantic season, which normally finishes in November.

Highest-Level Storm Risk

A category five storm is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

While the hurricane is projected to diminish in strength to a fourth-level storm before making landfall on the island, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the nation.

With tropical storm-strength wind and rainfall already expected long before it passes over Jamaica's central region - including potentially the capital, Kingston - advisories state that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and torrential rain has started and will cause devastating and dangerous sudden floods and numerous mudslides," advised weather authorities.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated: "I know that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are very concerned, and with good reason: you should be concerned.

"Yet the optimal approach to manage anxiety and any nervousness and anxiety is to be prepared."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to accumulate necessary supplies.

Advisories are also ongoing for regions of Haiti including the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is anticipated to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Mudslides currently triggered by the storm have caused two deaths in the country, according to emergency services.
