Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to energize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how vital this election is,” the mayor stated.

Adams continued, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”

This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a heated candidate debate.
