I thought I edged it - Carey on review reprieve.
Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey admitted he thought he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on DRS during day one of the third Ashes series Test against the English.
After surviving on 72, Carey went on to make a fine 106 to help the Australians reach 326-8 at the end of play in the Adelaide Oval.
The Key Moment
Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey went for a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.
The England team appealed confidently, thinking they had heard an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.
After captain Ben Stokes opted to review the decision, the technology reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a spike but this registered before the ball had made contact with the bat.
Gaffaney added he was of the opinion there was a space between bat and ball.
As a result, Carey was given not out.
"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," stated Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. There was a definite noise."
Ongoing Scrutiny
Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' throughout the Ashes contest after a number of dubious calls.
Bowling coach David Saker suggested England may escalate this latest incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.
"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.
"There have been concerns about it for the whole series. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. It is what it is."
A Special Hundred
Carey's century was his maiden in Ashes cricket.
It was also an heartfelt moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by looking to the skies.
"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," said Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. It's hard not to get emotional. It was truly wonderful."
History of Controversy
Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.
He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, which created a febrile final day.
On his reprieve he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
"Perhaps luck was on my side."
