International Bodies and the UK Decry an ‘Egregious Wrong’ of Publisher Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Imprisonment.
The sentencing of pro-democracy activist , a UK passport holder Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Rights groups and several nations have described the national security convictions politically motivated.
Widespread Disapproval and Calls for Release
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper declared that the lengthy imprisonment constitutes a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She characterized the legal case as having political underpinnings pursuant to legislation aimed at quieting critics of China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and free him to his family.
“This outcome demonstrates how the imprecise and extensive stipulations of Hong Kong’s legal framework are subject to interpretation in contravention of global human rights commitments,” said top UN human rights official Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deplores” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and demanded his prompt and absolute freedom.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered pro-democracy newspaper, was detained following the imposition of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following extended demonstrations backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was found guilty on counts of plotting to create inflammatory publications and colluding with overseas entities. The collusion allegations were brought under the controversial security law.
A Son’s Anguish
The activist's child, Sebastien, shared that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation separated from his loved ones. His international counsel described him the “planet's most prominent prisoner of conscience” behind bars at present.
Sebastien Lai commented that while the outcome was foreseen, its reality was harsher than imagined, though it brought some “respite” that the judicial farce had concluded.
Diplomatic Fallout
The sentencing has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in talks with President Xi Jinping recently. Yet, any potential progress towards his release is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the value of improved bilateral relations announced recently, saying it felt “somewhat insensitive.”
Government Reactions
In contrast, the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee stated the sentence manifested that “law and order is maintained.”
An official representing China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, called Lai the “chief architect” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the trial had been “legitimate and lawful.” He advised international actors to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.
A Representative Verdict
Media freedom advocates called Lai as a symbol of diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Their director general remarked it was a “somber occasion for those who care about a liberty of the press.”
Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting national security offences, Lai’s harsh punishment is viewed as the most severe yet delivered under the controversial legislation.
