Patrick Bamford Joins Sheffield United After Leading Abusive Chants About Manager Chris Wilder
The striker is now a member of the Championship side only half a year after starting derogatory chants aimed at the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, without a club since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a deal with the Championship strugglers through the winter. His seven-year spell with Leeds finished by mutual consent in August.
Among Bamford’s last memorable actions while at Leeds was to lead abusive songs about Wilder during Leeds' promotion celebrations in April. Now, the one-cap England player is set to play for Wilder as the Blades’ manager seeks to rescue the team he loves out of the drop zone.
Previous History Involving Bamford and Wilder
Both men had history prior to Leeds earned promotion to the Premier League last season while Sheffield United lost the promotion decider to Sunderland. The manager described the forward as a "muppet" when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and the Blades secured automatic promotion while Leeds missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Reconciliation & Moving Forward
Everything appears has been put behind them with Sheffield United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, urgently requiring of improvement up front and Bamford hoping to revive his career.
The Wilder chant went viral this spring. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Wilder commented back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no issue whatsoever with that. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow pro! But I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We spent 20 minutes and similarly I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and had a longer discussion together and he's a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that is part and parcel of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I have absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I said that to Pat.”
Latest Career Challenges
The forward made 18 games with Leeds United last season but the former Forest, Chelsea and Boro player has struggled with injury in recent years.
