During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
